Protect Your Home From the Negative Effects of Snow

Thursday, February 3rd, 2011 by Samantha Gray

2011 has proven to be a record year thus far. It's only February 3 and this year's snowfall of 37.8 inches has exceeded last year by 10 inches! Overall, Philadelphia has seen 116.5 inches of snow this winter, and there's more to come.

Snow doesn't just cause problems for motorists, but homeowners as well. There's the ice damming and roof cave-ins, but there's also runoff. Let's take a look.

Once the snow begins to melt, or if the rain begins to pour, many homeowners see a lot of water leaking from the roof and settling in the soil around the foundation. This makes for the perfect setting for water damage in a basement.

The water begins to rise beneath the foundation and could leak into the basement'something that could be prevented in a basement protected by a sump pump system. This system actually sucks up the water and distributes it away from the house.

With water comes water damage and with water damage there's mold growth. Once you have mold you'll notice a musty odor. Yay for snow!
